The State of Hessen is the first regional entity in Germany to offer funding opportunities to those individual fellowship (IF) researchers having submitted an MSCA application and received a Seal of Excellence for their project from the European Commission.

The State of Hessen, situated at the centre of Germany, offers great research opportunities for MSCA fellows in a broad range of fields, including i.a. digitization, climate research and health. Hessen is home to some of Germany's leading universities and research institutes.

Hessen strives to attract talents and has therefore recently introduced its MSCA fellowship programme for all research fields. The Hessian “Marie Skłodowska-Curie-Stipendium Hessen” fellowship is part of the newly established state programme  "HESSEN HORIZON", which will run from 2020 to 2023.

Upon application at the Hessian Ministry of Research and the Arts, up to six researchers per year can be granted an MSCA IF fellowship financed by the state of Hessen. The amount of the fellowship allowance is equivalent to the MSCA allowance fixed in the respective Commission MSCA work programme.

The Hessian Ministry of Research and the Arts receives applications of incoming researchers willing to carry out their research project in Hessen either at universities or specific research institutes (Außeruniversitäre Forschungseinrichtungen) or in the business sector. Applications can be submitted at the ministry as soon as MSCA applicants have received their Seal of Excellence certificate from the Commission.

A guideline (dated 12 Jan 2021) providing further information details as well as contact details of the ministry’s EU unit are available here.
